Health and Safety Policy for Removals Harrow
Removals Harrow is committed to providing a professional removals service that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, transport and storage activities across our service area.
We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures. Health and safety is a core part of how we plan and deliver every move, from initial enquiry through to final delivery.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
Removals Harrow will take all reasonably practicable steps to:
Provide and maintain vehicles, equipment and working systems that are safe and without risks to health.
Ensure that all staff receive appropriate health and safety training for their roles, including manual handling and safe driving practices.
Assess and manage risks associated with removals work, including lifting, carrying, loading, unloading and driving.
Provide safe arrangements for the packing, protection and transportation of customers belongings.
Promote a positive health and safety culture where staff are encouraged to report hazards, near misses and concerns.
Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and codes of practice applicable to our operations.
Responsibilities for Health and Safety
Health and safety is a shared responsibility across the company. Clear responsibilities are in place to ensure effective management and continuous improvement.
Management is responsible for setting health and safety standards, providing resources, monitoring performance and reviewing this policy. Managers and supervisors must make sure that risk assessments are carried out, control measures are implemented and staff understand safe working procedures.
Employees are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must follow training and instructions, use equipment correctly and report hazards, defects or incidents without delay.
Customers also play a part by providing accurate information about access, parking and property conditions, and by keeping pathways clear where reasonably practicable so that our teams can work safely.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Removals Harrow undertakes regular risk assessments for key activities, including lifting and carrying of items, stair work, vehicle loading and unloading, driving and parking, working in customers homes and business premises, and use of trolleys and other equipment.
Based on these assessments, we establish safe systems of work for our removal teams. These procedures include planning the move, selecting appropriate equipment, using correct lifting techniques, working in teams where loads are heavy or awkward, and communicating effectively on site.
Site specific risks, such as restricted access, uneven surfaces, low ceilings or heavy specialist items, are reviewed on a case by case basis so that suitable control measures can be put in place before work begins.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a central part of the removals industry. To reduce the risk of injury, all staff receive manual handling guidance relevant to their role. This includes how to assess a load, plan a lift, use the legs and keep the back in a safe position, and when to stop and seek assistance or equipment.
Removals Harrow provides appropriate handling aids, such as sack trucks, dollies, straps and protective covers, to minimise manual effort and reduce the chance of damage or injury. Staff are expected to use this equipment correctly and to inspect it visually before use. Any defects, damage or concerns must be reported immediately so that equipment can be repaired or taken out of service.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
Our vehicles are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition. Regular checks are carried out to ensure that brakes, tyres, lights and safety features are in good working order. Vehicles are loaded and secured in line with safe loading practices to prevent movement of goods and maintain vehicle stability.
Drivers must hold a suitable licence, follow road traffic laws and drive in a manner that protects themselves, their colleagues and other road users. Fatigue, distraction and speeding are not tolerated. Routes and schedules are planned as far as practicable to allow sufficient time and to take account of local conditions.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
When working at customer premises, our teams take steps to minimise risks to occupants, neighbours and members of the public. This includes maintaining clear walkways where possible, using caution with doors, staircases and shared areas, and taking extra care where children, elderly people or pets are present.
Where there is a need to work in communal areas, on pavements or near roads, the team will work in a way that reduces trip risks, protects passing pedestrians and avoids unnecessary obstruction. Any spills or debris created by our work are cleared as soon as reasonably practicable.
Training, Information and Supervision
All new staff receive an introduction to our health and safety standards as part of their induction. Further job specific training is provided for removals operatives, drivers and supervisors. Topics include manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, incident reporting and customer care.
Ongoing refresher training is provided where required, and additional instruction may be given when new equipment, vehicles or procedures are introduced. Supervisors monitor working practices on site and provide guidance or corrective action where needed to maintain safe standards.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly to a supervisor or manager. This enables us to provide support, investigate the causes and put measures in place to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures are in place for incidents such as fire, serious injury, road traffic accidents and sudden illness. Staff are briefed on how to raise the alarm, contact the appropriate emergency services and protect themselves and others while awaiting assistance.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Removals Harrow monitors health and safety performance through incident reports, feedback from staff and customers, vehicle and equipment checks, and on site observations. Lessons learned from incidents or near misses are reviewed and communicated to relevant staff.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice, our services or the nature of the risks we manage. All staff are expected to cooperate with any changes and to contribute ideas to improve safety in our removals operations.
By working together, we aim to deliver a professional removals service that combines efficiency with a strong and ongoing commitment to health, safety and welfare.
